Garden City is a town in northwestern Rich County, Utah, United States. The population was 562 at the 2010 census. Garden City sits on the shores of Bear Lake and is a popular summer resort destination town, thus nicknamed the "Caribbean of the Rockies" In 1903, Horatio Nelson Jackson and Sewall Crocker stopped in Garden City on the first automobile journey across the U.S. There is a large number of vacation homes, the majority of which are rented out to large groups during the vacation season. The town has a humid continental climate with warm summers (Köppen Dfb). The town was first settled in 1877, and an LDS branch was formed there. In 1979, it merged with the neighboring town of Pickelville, and is now a suburb of Salt Lake City. History
Garden City was first settled in 1877, and an LDS branch was formed there. In 1979, it merged with the neighboring town of Pickelville. In 1903, Horatio Nelson Jackson and Sewall Crocker stopped in Garden City on the first automobile journey across the United States. The town has a population of about 2,000. It is located on the banks of the Little Colorado River, which runs through the center of the city. It was founded as a settlement by Mormon pioneers in the mid-1870s. In 1877 the town was established as a ward, and in 1979 it became a town. It has been home to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 1877. It also has a branch of the Mormon Church, which was established there in 1878. The city's population is about 1,200 people. The population of Garden City was 2,100 in 1979, and 2,200 in 2000. It lies on the river, which flows through the middle of the town, and into the city's central business district, which is called Garden City Center. The community is located near the junction of two main roads, which run through Garden City and the city of Pickelsville. The two towns share a road that was built in the early 1900s, and was named after the town's first post-WWII mayor, George P. P. Cottrell, who was born in 1858. The current mayor, John A. Smith, was elected to office in 1953.
