Castle Dale is a city in northwestern Emery County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,630 at the 2010 census. The first settlement at Castle Dale was made in 1879. Summer afternoons are hot with intense sunshine, although mornings are pleasantly cool, while winter mornings are frigid. The wettest month since record began has been October 2006 with 3.80 inches or 96.5 millimetres. Snowfall in the city is limited to 16.6 inches or 0.42 metres, with the snowiest month being January 1980 with 24.2 inches. The city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.6 km²), all land. Utah State Route 10 passes through the center of town, leading northeast 31 miles (50km) to Price and southwest 37 miles (60 km) to Interstate 70. History

The first settlement at Castle Dale was made in 1879. Castle Dale is one of the oldest settlements in the United Kingdom. It is located on the banks of the River Dale, near the village of Castle Dale. The first settlement was made on the site in 1878. The site is now home to a number of tourist attractions, including Castle Dale Castle and the Castle Dale Estate, which was built in the 19th century.

Geography

Castle Dale lies on the north side of Cottonwood Creek, a tributary of the San Rafael River.According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.6 km²), all land. Utah State Route 10 passes through the center of town, leading northeast 31 miles (50 km) to Price and southwest 37 miles (60km) to Interstate 70. The city is located in the U.S. state of Utah and has a population of 1,788. It is located on the northern edge of Castle Valley, which is part of the Wasatch Range of the Rocky Mountains. The town's elevation is 2,744 feet (738 meters) and it has a land mass of 2,638 feet (539 meters) according to the Census Bureau. It has a water supply from Cottonwood creek, which runs through the city, and a river that runs through it. It also has a lake, which flows through the town and is known as the "Castle River" The city's name comes from the Spanish word for "castle" or "dale", which means "hill" and means "diamond" in Spanish. It was founded in the 17th century. The name was later changed to Castle Dale, after a local family of the same name. The current name is derived from the name of a nearby mountain. It means "canyon" or, in Spanish, "dales" meaning "mountains".

The snowiest year from July 1936 to June 1937 was 47.0 inches or 1.19 metres, and the driest 1956 was 3.87 inches or 98.3 millimetre. In an average year, all but 14.2 afternoon top freezing in an averageyear. The driest year was 1965 with 14.28 inches or 362.7 millimeters. The warmest year on record was 1998 with a temperature of 26.2 degrees Celsius. The coldest year has been 1998 with an average temperature of 22.7 degrees Celsius, but the warmest month on record has been 2007 with a temperatures of 23.7 degree Celsius. It is the only place in the U.S. where the average temperature is lower than 20 degrees Fahrenheit (CfF) in the summer. The highest temperature in the area is 26.3 degrees F (CdF) on July 25, 1998. The lowest temperature in August is 20.3 degree F (F2) on August 26, 1998, when the temperature drops to 20.0 degrees F.
