Clinton is the county seat of Van Buren County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,602 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous city in the county (reclaiming the distinction from the resort community of Fairfield Bay). The city was named for DeWitt Clinton, the New York governor who built the Erie Canal; he had also been a U.S. Senator from New York. The city is situated on the shore of the Archey Fork, a tributary of the Upper Little Red River which flows into Greers Ferry Lake. A channelization project in 1982 following a major flood event has recently been re-engineered by The Nature Conservancy. The restoration is now part of the city's historic downtown park and trail system. The National Championship Chuckwagon Races are held annually at the Bar of Ranch, drawing many thousands to the area each Labor Day weekend with rodeo and music performances. On February 5, 2008 an EF4 tornado struck Clinton, killing three people and destroying many homes and businesses, including a boat manufacturing facility. The Clinton mascot and athletic emblem is the Yellowjacket. Clinton is a high school graduate of the 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist swimmer John Hargis, who went on to win the 1996 Gold Medal for Swimming with the Harlem Globetrotters. Geography

The City of Clinton is situated on the shore of the Archey Fork, a tributary of the Upper Little Red River which flows into Greers Ferry Lake. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.6 square miles (30 km²) of which 11.4 square miles is land and 0.52 km² (1.64%) is water. The city is located on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Army Riverine Riverine Waterway, which is a major source of water for the city of Clinton. The river is one of the largest rivers in the state, with more than 1,000 miles (2,000 km) of water flowing through it. It is also the largest river in West Virginia, with over 1,200 miles (1,600 km) flowing through the city. The U.N. World Heritage Site is located in the city, along with a number of national parks, including Mount Rushmore and the Grand Canyon. The National Park Service is based in Clinton.

The National Championship Chuckwagon Races are held annually at the Bar of Ranch in Clinton. The event is a major tourist attraction drawing many thousands to the area each Labor Day weekend with rodeo and futurity events, auctions, live music performances, and the grand finale Snowy River race. The race is held on the banks of the Snowy river, which runs through the town of Clinton. It is one of the largest Chuckwagon races in the world. The winner of the race receives a $10,000 prize for the best overall finish. The final race of the season takes place on September 28, 2013, at the Bar of Ranch, in Clinton, New York. The prize money for the winner is $5,000, with the winner receiving $1,000 for the second place winner, $2,500 for the third place winner and $3,000 each for the fourth and fifth place finishers.

Tornado outbreak

On February 5, 2008 an EF4 tornado struck Clinton, killing three people. The tornado destroyed many homes and businesses, including a boat manufacturing facility. It was the deadliest tornado to hit Clinton since the town was hit by an EF3 tornado in 1998. The town was also the site of a deadly tornado in 2007.
