Hawesville is a home rule-class city on the south bank of the Ohio River in Hancock County, Kentucky, in the United States. The population was 945 at the 2010 census. The Lincoln Trail Bridge carries Kentucky Trail Route 69 across the Ohio at Hawesville, connecting the city with Cannelton, Indiana. The city was formally established in 1836 and incorporated by the state assembly in 1847. The Immaculate Conception Church's listing on the National Register of Historic Places was demolished and replaced with a modern structure. It is included in the Owensboro metropolitan area of Kentucky and Indiana. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Hawesville has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.2 km²), all land. It has a lending library, a branch of the Hancock County Public Library, and a park with a baseball field. It was named for Richard Hawes Sr., who donated land for a county seat in 1829. The town is located on the Ohio river, which runs through Hancock County and into Kentucky. The Ohio River runs through the center of the city, leading southeast 10 miles (16 km) to Cloverport and southwest 25 miles (40km) to Owensboro. It also runs through a section of Hancock County that is part of the Indiana-Kentucky state line, leading south to Indiana and the Kentucky border. The state line runs through Hawesville and into Indiana, leading north to Kentucky and the Indiana/Kentucky border.

The Lincoln Trail Bridge carries Kentucky Route 69 across the Ohio at Hawesville. U.S. Route 60 passes through the southwest part of Hawesville, leading southeast 10 miles (16 km) to Cloverport and southwest 25 miles (40km) to Owensboro. According to the United States Census Bureau, Hawesville has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.2 km²), all land. The city is located on the Indiana-Kentucky state line, and is located near the town of Cannelton, Indiana, on the Kentucky-Illinois state line. It has a population of 2,816. The town is located at 37.5356 miles (86.455570 kilometers) north of Cincinnati, Ohio. The Ohio River runs through the city, and the city is on its south bank. It is also on its north bank, and on the hills that rise south of the river. The area is known as the "Ohio River City" because of its proximity to the Ohio. It also has a number of historic sites, including the Ohio and Kentucky Turnpike, which were built in the 19th century. It was also the site of the Battle of the Bulge, which took place in the late 1800s.
History

The Immaculate Conception Church was demolished in the 1970s and replaced by a modern building. It is still listed on the N Register of Historical Buildings and is located in the town of Hawesville, in Hancock County, Ohio. The town is home to the Hawesville High School, which was founded in 1829. The school was the first in the state to offer high school diplomas to its students. The high school was also the first to have a gymnasium, which opened in 1835. The first high school to open was in 1838, and it was the only one in the county to do so until 1847, when it was moved to a new location. The state assembly incorporated the city as a city in 1839.
