South Plainfield is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The borough's name derives from Plainfield, which derived its name from a local estate or from its scenic location. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 23,385, reflecting an increase of 1,575 (+7.2%) from the 21,810 counted in the 2000 Census. South Plainfield was incorporated by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 12, 1926, from portions of Piscataway Township, based on the results of a referendum passed on April 6, 1926. Unincorporated communities, localities and place names located partially or completely within the township include Avon Park, Hadley Airport, Holly Park and Samptown. The U.S. Census Bureau says the borough had a total area of 8.33 square miles (21.58 km²) of land and 0.04 square miles of water (0.42%) as of the 2000 census. The median household income in the borough was $92,263 (with a margin of error of +/ $5,066) and the median family income was $98,913 (+/ $4,289). Males had a median income of $61,480 (-/ $7,597) versus $48,639 (-/$4,924) for females. About 2.7% of families and 4.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.9% of those under age 18.

The borough has a population of 2,816. It is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which connects to New York City and New Jersey via the Raritan River and the Delaware River. It has an elevation of 1,077.5 feet (396.5 meters) The township is located in New Jersey's Hudson County, which borders New Jersey and New York State. It also has an area of 0.04 square miles of water (0.42 km²), making it the smallest borough in the state. The township's population is 2,722. It was the largest borough in Hudson County in the early 1900s, and is the second largest in the county in the 20th century, after New Jersey’s Mount Vernon. The population of Mount Vernon, New Jersey, in the 1940s and 1950s was 1,827. It had a population in the 1950s and 1960s of 3,715. The current population of the borough is 3,822.

The Plainfield Curling Club is a curling club in Plainfield, New Jersey. The club was established in 1963 and its two-sheet structure was completed in 1967. It is the only dedicated curling facility in New Jersey and the only one of its kind in the state. It has a total of eight curling sheets and a total capacity of 2,000 people. It was founded in 1963 by a group of local businessmen. The current club was formed in 1967 and is the first of its type in the U.S. to be established in a city. It opened its doors to the public in September of that year and has been in existence ever since. It also has a women's and men's curling section. The men's club has a men's and women's singles section as well as a ladies' section. It's the only New Jersey club to have its own two sheets of curling ice and has a full-time curling rink. The South Plainfield Public Schools serve students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. As of the 202021 school year, the district, comprised of seven schools, had an enrollment of 3,400 students and 304.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a studentteacher ratio of 11.2:1. Kennedy Elementary School, John E. Al-Minhaal Academy is an accredited, private Islamic school. Lincoln Technical Institute's campus is anredited, diesel technology school that was established in 1969 as a training center to accommodate the need for diesel mechanics. The district's high school is South Plainfied High School with 1,076 students ingrades 9-12 and 529 students in grade 7-8. The school's elementary and middle schools are: Roosevelt Elementary, Grant Elementary and John F Kennedy Elementary. The high school's middle school is: John E Riley Elementary and Grant Elementary, and the high school has 1,084 students in Grade 7-10 and 529Students in Grade 8-9.
