Farmington

Farmington is a city in San Juan County in the U.S. state of New Mexico. It is located at the junction of the San Juan River, the Animas River, and the La Plata River. The city has a total area of 32.0 square miles (83.2 km²), of which 31.5 square miles is land and 0.5 km² is water. As of the 2020 census the city had a total population of 46,624 people. The primary non-government industries of Farmington are the production of petroleum, natural gas, and coal and its function as a major retail hub. On March 18, 1950, Farmington was the site of a UFO sighting in which the town's population was reported to have seen large saucers in the sky flying at rapid speeds. The area was originally known as "Junction City" because of the access to the three rivers. In 1901 the town was incorporated and named Farmington with a population of 548. In the 1920s there was significant investment in natural gas and oil in the area, although actual production remained low until the 1950s. It grew from 3,637 in 1950 to 35,000 in 1953 and the expansion continued after that. In 1967 a nuclear detonation occurred 50 miles (80 km) east of farmington and about 25 miles (40 km) south of Dulce, New Mexico in present-day Carson National Forest. It was reported that half the mass of a mass of which over half the population were Native Americans was a mass UFO sighting.

History

The area that is now Farmington was settled by Ancestral Pueblo people in the 7th Century. A key part of the region was known in Navajo as Tóta' which means "where three rivers meet" In 1901 the town was incorporated and named Farmington with a population of 548. In the 1920s there was significant investment in natural gas and oil in the area, although actual production remained low until the 1950s. In 1967, as part of a joint U.S. Government-El Paso Electric operation, an underground nuclear detonation occurred 50 miles (80 km) east of Farmington and about 25 miles (40 km) south of Dulce, New Mexico. The town was the site of a mass UFO sighting on March 18, 1950, in which over half the town's population was reported to have seen large saucers in the sky flying at rapid speeds. It grew from 3,637 in 1950 to 35,000 in 1953 and the expansion continued after that. However, the significant connection to the energy industry made the economics of the town largely vulnerable to international market fluctuations during the 1970s energy crisis and resulted in some economic diversification. It has been the subject of several civil rights investigations, including the 2005 report, The Farmington Report: Civil Rights for Native Americans 30 Years Later. It is located in San Juan County, in the western part of New Mexico, near the border with New Mexico and New Mexico's Rio Grande Valley.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Farmington has a total area of 32.0 square miles (83 km²) The city can experience hot summers and cold winters with low precipitation throughout the year. The average annual snowfall is 12.3 inches (0.31 m). The city has a semi-arid climate with low temperatures and low precipitation. The city is located on the Colorado River, which runs through the center of the city. It is the only city in the state to have a population of more than 100,000. The population of Farmington was 1,715,000 at the 2010 census. It has an area of 31.5square miles (82 km²), of which 0.5 square miles is land and 0.3square miles is water. The town has an average annual rainfall of 0.7 inches (1.1 m) and an average yearly snowfall of 12 inches (2.3 m) It is one of the few cities in the United States to have more than 1,000 square miles of public land (1,721 km²). The town is located in the eastern part of the state and has an elevation of 1,700 feet (400 m) above sea level. It was founded in 1858. The first post office opened in Farmington in 1859. The current post office was established in 1881. The area has a surface of 32 square miles, or 83 km², with an average daily rainfall of 1.8 inches (3.2 m) per year.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 45,895 people and 17,548 housing units in Farmington. There were 16,466 households, out of which 33.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49% were married couples living together, 13.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% were non-families. 21.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.7 and the average family size was 3.19. The racial makeup of the city was 62.8% White, 1.0% African American, 22.2% Native American, 0.6%. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 22.4%. The city is home to the University of New Mexico's football team, the New Mexico State University team, and the University Of New Mexico Women's basketball team. The city has a population of about 45,000 people, with 17,500 of those living in the town of Farmington, New Mexico. It is located on the U.S.-Mexico border and is located near the junction of I-20 and I-15. The U.N. State Department says Farmington is one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States, with a population growth rate of 3.7%. It is the only city in the state to have a city center with more than 10,000 residents.

Arts and culture

Farmington has been the home of the Connie Mack World Series baseball tournament since 1965. Piñon Hills Golf Course, designed by Ken Dye, in Farmington is one of the United States' Top Municipal Golf Courses. Fishing is permitted on the San Juan River, Navajo Lake, Lake Farmington, Morgan Lake, the Animas River, Jackson Lake and Cutter Dam.Farmington holds a riverfest once a year. Area rivers are celebrated with a festival of music, fine arts, food, entertainment, a 10K and 5K run and walk, riverside trail walks, and river raft rides. The city is home to the U.S. National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, which is located in the city's historic downtown area. It is also home to a number of museums, including the National Museum of American History, the National Baseball Museum, and the Museum of Natural History and Museum of Puerto Rico, which was established in 1916. The U.N. World Cup is held in the City of Farmington every year in August, with a capacity of more than 10,000 people. It has been cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but will be held again in 2018. It's the first time the city has hosted the World Cup in the summer since it was first held in 1966. The tournament is played in August every year at Ricketts Park (capacity 5,072), and is open to players age 16 to 18. It consists of 10 or more teams from various regions around the US.

Education

The Farmington Municipal School District serves over 10,000 students in grades K-12 in 20 schools. Navajo Preparatory School is a Bureau of Indian Education-affiliated tribal school. Sacred Heart School, Farmington (K-8), of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gallup, was established in 1910. Farmington Public Library moved into a new building in 2003 and holds about 200,000 items in its collection. There was a branch library in Shiprock that is currently closed. San Juan College is a public two-year college with average enrollment of about 10,00. New Mexico School for the Deaf operates a preschool facility in Farmington. The high schools are Farmington High School, Piedra Vista High School and Rocinante High School. There are four middle schools, Heights, Hermosa, Mesa View and Tibbetts. The local high school is Farmington Elementary, which was founded in 1903. The town is home to the New Mexico State Museum, which opened its doors in 1913. It is located in the center of the town, near the intersection of Interstate 25 and I-40. It has a population of about 6,000. The city is located on the Colorado River, which flows through the town to the north and south. It was the site of the U.S. Civil War Battle of New Mexico, which took place in 1875 and 1876. The U.N. World War II Memorial, which stands on the town's outskirts, was built in the 1940s.

Infrastructure

Farmington is served by Four Corners Regional Airport. U.S. Highway 64 is the major eastwest highway through San Juan County and across Farmington. The Farmington Electric Utility System (FEUS) is owned and operated by the City of Farmington, serving approximately 46,000 metered customers. The City's water comes from Farmington Lake, which is sourced from and fed using pumps located on the Animas River. The Navajo Transit System provides regional bus service in the Navajo Nation. As of October 2022, 5G service remains unavailable in Farmington and other parts of New Mexico. The Red Apple Transit District provides intercity bus service from Chama, NM and Dulce, NM. The city contracts all solid waste operations to Waste Management (of New Mexico) Inc., including general solid waste, recycling facilities and operations, and hazardous waste disposal. Disposal of City waste is done at theSan Juan County Landfill, owned by the county and also operated by Waster Management of New New Mexico (Waster Management, Inc.) The city is located in the northern part of the Navajo Indian reservation, near the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness area. It is located on New Mexico's eastern border with Arizona, and is located near the town of Aztec, New Mexico, and the state's southern border with Colorado. Its service territory covers 1,718 square miles and encompasses the city, much of San Juan county, and a small portion of Rio Arriba County.

Politics

As of August 2022, Farmington had approximately 28,548 active registered voters. Like the rest of San Juan County, it is a politically conservative community surrounded by generally more liberal counties, and situated within an overall more liberal/left-leaning state.Voting has historically strongly favored conservative ideals and candidates. State and local government bonds and other tax-imposing initiatives are almost always approved by the electorate. There were 24.4% unaffiliated with a party, 51.0% Republican, 22.2% Democrat, 1.2%, Libertarian, and 1. 2% various other parties. The town is located in the eastern part of the state, near the border with New Mexico and the state capital of Alamogordo. It has a population of about 28,000, with most of its residents living in the town of Farmington. It is located on the eastern side of the San Juan River, which flows into the San Diego River. The city's population is about 22,500, with the majority living in Farmington and the majority of its surrounding areas. It was founded in 1881. It had a population in 1883 of about 13,000; it has a current population of 28,527. It lies in the western part of San Diego County, which is the state's eastern part, and is located near the state capitol of Alamagordo, which lies on the western edge of the county. The community is located along the San Luis River, and its population is around 22,000.
