Anton Chico is a census-designated place in Guadalupe County, New Mexico, United States. Its population was 188 as of the 2010 census, of which 167 were Hispanic in origin. Anton Chico was one of the closest New Mexican settlements to the Great Plains with its bison herds and Plains Indians. Many Ciboleros (bison hunters) and Comancheros (traders with the Plains Indians) originated from Anton Chiko and other Hispano communities along the Pecos River in the 19th century. Anton chico is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It is located at 35.194866°N 105.143895°W / 35.184866; -105.143995; 1.784 square miles (4.62 km²) New Mexico State Road 386 passes through the community. In 1958 tin roofs rather than adobe were on the majority of houses. It has a cold steppe climate (BSk) under the Köen Classification of climate. Under the Trewartha climate classification the climate is a hot hot steppe hot hot (BSakak) in the warmer months of the year. It operates Rita M. Marquez Elementary School and Santa Rosa High School in Santa Rosa. It also operates Rita Marquez Middle School and Anton. Chico Middle School in the Santa Rosa Consolidated Schools district. The West Las Vegas School District is the sole comprehensive high school in the district.

It was founded in 1858 by a group of miners. The city was named after the Anton Chico family, who first settled the area in the 18th century. History
Anton Chico was a settlement on the Pecos River in New Mexico. It was one of the closest New Mexican settlements to the Great Plains with its bison herds and Plains Indians. Many Ciboleros (bison hunters) and Comancheros (traders with the Plains Indians) originated from Anton Chico and other Hispano communities in the 19th century. In 1890 it had a population of 900 people, all or nearly all Hispanic, and was a mercantile center for much of eastern New Mexico, but with out-migration the population and economic activity declined. A factor in its decline was the re-routing of Route 66 which before 1937 crossed the PECos River near Anton ChICO. The town is now part of the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico and is on the border of Arizona. It is located on the U.S. border with Texas. The city is now the location of the town of Pueblo, Mexico and of the state of New Mexico's largest city, Santa Fe. It has been the site of numerous battles between the United States Army and the Comanches since the early 1800s. It also has been known as the birthplace of the Mexican-American Trail of Tears, which led to the creation of the modern-day town of El Paso, Texas, in the 1930s and '40s. Its name is derived from the word "Anton", which means "the river" or "the place".

Santa Rosa Consolidated Schools operates Rita M. Marquez Elementary School and Anton Chico Middle School. Santa Rosa High School is the district's sole comprehensive high school. In 1973 the Anton ChICO elementary, which covered Kindergarten through grade 6, had 154 students. The West Las Vegas School District offered to have school bus transportation to its schools and asked the State of New Mexico to pay for the transportation costs, but in 1973 the New Mexico State Board of Education denied the request to pay. The district closed the junior high school and began sending middle school students to Santa Rosa. This in turn made theAnton Chico residents upset at the school district. The school district closed its junior high in 1973 and sent the students to the Santa Rosa high school, which was the only high school in the district. It also closed its middle school in 1973, which made the residents upset. The Santa Rosa school district is now called Santa Rosa Elementary and Santa Rosa Middle Schools. It is also known as Santa Rosa Consolidate Schools and has two high schools, Santa Rosa Junior High andSanta Rosa High. It has two middle schools and two elementary schools, Rita Marquez and AntonChico Elementary. It was founded in 1872 and Anton chico Elementary was opened in 1883. It had 154 pupils in 1973; it now has more than 1,000 students in all three schools. It opened its middle and elementary schools in 1884 and 1885. It closed its Junior High School in 1973.
