Oradell is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 U.S. Census, the borough's population was 7,978. The borough includes a dam on the Hackensack River that forms the Oradell Reservoir. The name derives its name from "ora" (Latin for "edge") and "dell". New Jersey Monthly ranked Oradello as the 68th best place to live in New Jersey in its 2010 rankings of the "Top Towns" in the state. New Jersey Family, a resource for New Jersey parents, ranked the borough as the winner of "New Jersey's Best Towns for Families 2016" The borough borders the municipalities of Dumont, Emerson, New Milford, Paramus and River Edge. Unincorporated communities, localities and place names located partially or completely within the borough include Delford, Emerson and Paramus. It is located approximately 15 miles (24 km) northwest of Midtown Manhattan and is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which runs from Long Island to New York City. It has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen "Cfa" on climate maps), characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. It was formed on March 8, 1894, as the borough of Delford from portions of Harrington Township, Midland Township (now Rochelle Park) and Palisades Township. On November 12, 1920, the Borough's name was officially changed to "Oradeel", based on the results of a referendum held ten days earlier.
Geography
Oradell Reservoir was formed by the Oradell Dam placed on the Hackensack River in 1923. The reservoir is fed by the Pascack Brook and Dwars Kill in addition to the HackENSack River. In August 2011, the water level in the reservoir rose two feet above the top of the dam, allowing billions of gallons of water to flow over the dam and exacerbating flooding conditions. The borough borders the Bergen County municipalities of Dumont, Emerson, Haworth, New Milford, Paramus and River Edge. Unincorporated communities, localities and place names located partially or completely within the borough include Delford. The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, oradell has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that the borough had a total area of 2.57 square miles (6.65 km²), including 2.41 square miles [6.25 km²] of land and 0.16 sq miles (0.40 km²) of water (6.07%) as of the 2010 Census. It has a population of 1,788. It is located in the New Jersey Bay Area, which includes the towns of Bergen, Passaic, Asbury Park, Montclair, and Montclair Township. It also borders the New York City borough of New York.
Demographics
The 2010 United States census counted 7,978 people, 2,749 households, and 2,293 families in the borough. The median household income was $123,750 (with a margin of error of +/ $23,641) and the median family income was$147,139 (+/ $14,419) Same-sex couples headed 14 households in 2010, an increase from the 13 counted in 2000. 3.1% of Oradell's residents identified themselves as being of Armenian American ancestry. This was the 11th highest percentage of ArmenianAmerican people in any place in the United States with 1,000 or more residents identifying their ancestry. The racial makeup of the borough was 90.07% White, 0.48% African American, 0.04% Native American, 8.09% Asian, 0,01% Pacific Islander, 0, 32% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.09%. The median age of the population was 44.1 years. For every 100 females, the population had 91.6 males. The average household size was 2.87 and the average family size was 3.20. About 1.4% of families and 1.9% of the residents were below the poverty line, including none of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over. The per capita income for the Borough was $39,520.
Economy
Oradell is the headquarters for Huntington Learning Center, a learning center chain founded in 1977. The chain provides tutoring services for students in primary and secondary schools and is specialized in standardized test preparation. Oradell also serves as a headquarters for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Council of Teachers of English, which is based in the city. The U.N. is the largest employer of English-speaking teachers in the world, with more than 1.2 million workers in the United States and more than 300,000 in Europe. The number of teachers in America is at an all-time high of 1.7 million. The average teacher's salary is $60,000. The national average teacher salary is about $50,000, and the number of full-time teachers is about 1,500. The United States has the highest teacher-to-student ratio in the country, at about 80%. The average student's test score is about 70 per cent, according to the National Center for Education Research and Training, which provides test preparation services for public schools and private schools. The American test scores are about 60 per cent for high school students and about 60per cent for college students. The National Council for Teachers of the English Language is the nation's largest teacher-training organization, with 1.4 million employees. The state of California has the lowest teacher-teacher ratio, at just over 50 per cent. It is the second-lowest rate in the nation, after Texas.
Government
Oradell is governed under the Borough form of New Jersey municipal government. The governing body is comprised of a Mayor and a Borough Council, with all positions elected at-large on a partisan basis as part of the November general election. Since November 2015 Oradell has been steadily tilting Democratic in its voting. The borough is located in New Jersey's 5th Congressional District and is part of its 38th state legislative district. New Jersey is represented in the United States Senate by Democrats Cory Booker (Newark, term ends 2027) and Bob Menendez (Harrison, term end 2025) Bergen County is governed by a directly elected County Executive, with legislative functions performed by a Board of County Commissioners. The County Clerk and County Surrogate are elected for five-year terms of office and the County Sheriff (elected for a three-year term) are also elected for a five- year term. For the 2022-2023 session, the 38th Legislative District of the New Jersey Legislature is represented by Joseph Lagana (D, Paramus) and in the General Assembly by Lisa Swain (D, Fair Lawn) and Chris Tully (D), Bergenfield. As of 2022, the county executive is Democratic James J. Tedesco III of Paramus, whose term of office ends December 31, 2022. In May 2018, Miriam Yu was selected to fill the seat expiring in December 2019 that became vacant following the resignation of Andrew Rudman. In the November 2017 general election, the Democratic and Republican candidates each took one seat.
Education
The Oradell Public School District serves students in kindergarten through sixth grade. As of the 2019-2020 school year, the district, comprised of one school, had an enrollment of 768 students and 64.2 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a studentteacher ratio of 12.0:1. The borough and neighboring River Edge share a combined school district for seventh through twelfth grades, River Dell Regional School District which was established in 1958. The district offers programs on a shared-time or full-time basis, with admission based on a selective application process and tuition covered by the student's home school district. Public school students from the borough, and all of Bergen County, are eligible to attend the secondary education programs offered by the Ber gen County Technical Schools. Bergen Catholic High School is a private Roman Catholic college preparatory school that was founded in 1955 and is run by the Christian Brothers of Ireland, under the auspices of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark. St. Joseph Elementary School, a Catholic school that serves children from Pre-K through grade 8, is part of the Newark Archdi Bishop's Diocese. It offers 17 sports at the varsity level, and attracts students from all over the Northern Jersey region. The Bergen Tech campus in Teterboro or Paramus offers a variety of programs for high school and college-age students. It is located on a former industrial site in the town of Hackensack, which was once the site of a steel mill.
Emergency services
Oradell has a volunteer fire department that was first established in 1894. It is home to Tower 21, Squad 22, Engine 23, Engine 24, and Scuba 26. Oradell also has a police department, also located on Kinderkamack Road near the fire station. The town has a population of 2,000. It has been home to the U.S. Army's 4th of July parade since 1894, when it was first held. It was also the site of the opening of the town's first school in 1892. It also hosted the opening ceremony of the U S. Embassy in London in 1903, when the first American troops arrived. The city's first post office was opened in 1891, and the town has since had its own post office. It closed in the 1950s, and was reopened in the 1960s, with a new post office opening in the 1970s. The current post office is located in the town centre, near the police department. It opened in the 1990s, after the town had its first police station, which opened in 1998. The police department is located on the same site as the fire department, and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, seven weeks a week. The fire station is also home to several dive teams, including a scuba diving unit and a dive rescue unit.
Organizations
Troop 36 was established on February 11, 1911. Troop 142 was re-established in 1999, and has over 40 members and more than 30 Eagle Scouts. Oradell has two Cub Scout packs; Pack 136 and Pack 142. It is the second-oldest continually operating Boy Scout troop in the United States. It has more than 170 Eagle Scouts and is one of the largest and most decorated troops in New Jersey. The troop is sponsored by American Legion Post 41 since 1919. It was the second troop chartered in the state of New Jersey and the first in the U.S. to be chartered by the Boy Scouts of America. The Troop 36 is the oldest Boy Scout Troop in the New Jersey area and the second oldest in the country. It started as Troop 1 and was chartered on February 10, 1911, and was the first Boy Scout troops chartered to be in the states of New York, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. It had more than 1,000 members at its inception. It now has over 1,200 members and is the third largest Boy Scout unit in thestate. It also has over 170 Eagle Scout members and over 40 Cub Scout members. The troops are sponsored by the American Legion, which has been a sponsor of the troop since 1919, and the Boy Scout Council since 1921. The Boy Scout council is made up of members from all over New Jersey, as well as the mayor and council members of the town of Oradella.
Transportation
As of May 2010, the borough had a total of 35.17 miles (56.60 km) of roadways, of which 30.06 miles (48.38 km) were maintained by the municipality and 5.11 miles (8.22 km) by Bergen County. County Route 503 is the only significant road serving Oradell, following Kinderkamack Road south to north through the middle of the borough. NJ Transit bus service is available to and from the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan on the 165 route, while local service is offered on the 762 and 772 bus linse. Saddle River Tours / Ameribus provides service to the George Washington Bridge Bus Station on route 11C. Rockland Coaches offers service on the 11T/11AT route from Stony Point, New York to the Port authority Bus Terminal. The borough is served by the Pascack Valley Line of NJ Transit, which runs from New Jersey to New York City on the East River. The Oradella train station is located at the intersection of Maple and Oradelli Avenues, and is the first station in the borough to open on July 1, 2010. The station is the last stop on NJ Transit's East River Line, which terminates at New Jersey Tech at the New Jersey/New York City International Airport. It is also the only station in New Jersey that is not located in the city of New York, and the only one in the state of New Jersey.
Places of interest
The Atwood-Blauvelt mansion on Kinderkamack Road, built 1897, is a prominent example of shingle style architecture. The New Milford Plant of the Hackensack Water Company was a water filtration and pumping plant located on Van Buskirk Island. The Doug Parcells Athletic Complex is a large field complex on Ridgewood Avenue next to the Oradell Swim Club. The Little Firehouse Theater is a stage theater with 210 seats that was originally a firehouse. The Bergen County Players, established in 1949, perform plays and musicals at the theater. A small park in the center of town was created in 1962 to honor astronaut Wally Schirra, marked by a plaque that reads "Home of Commander Walter M.Schirra Jr., USN, the first Jerseyman to orbit the Earth, Oct 3, 1962". Riverdell Hospital was located on Kinder kamack road. Opened in 1959, it closed in 1981 after it became known as the site of the alleged killings in the "Dr. X" murder trial of Mario Jascalevich and was torn down in 1984. The facility was named in 2005 for former borough recreation director who was the brother of former NFL coach Bill Parcells. It houses two turf fields, both of which host recreational sporting events. It also features a fieldhouse and a small playground. Many recreational sport games are hosted on these fields, and the elementary school utilizes the park. It was opened in 1959.
