Pocasset is a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Bourne in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, United States. The name derives from the Pocasset Wampanoag and evolved over time. The population was 2,851 at the 2010 census. The CDP has a total area of 9.8 square miles (25.3 km²). 3.7 square miles of it is land, and 6.1 square miles. (15.8 km²) of it (62.42%) is water. It is bordered to the north by the villages of Bournne and Monument Beach, to the east by the Massachusetts Route 28 highway, and to the south by the village of Cataumet and Red Brook Pond. In May 2016, three homes in a Pocassett neighborhood received bottled water, because of elevated perfluorinated organic compounds in drinking water, linked to firefighting foam used after military fuel truck crashes at Otis Rotary, which connects to nearby Otis Air National Guard Base. The average household size in the CDP is 2.70, with 16.1% under the age of 18, 4.9% from 18 to 24, 20.5% from 25 to 44, 30.4% from 45 to 64, and 28.0% who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females, there were 92.0 males. The median income for a household in theCDP was $97,523.
Geography
Pocasset is located in the southwestern part of the town of Bourne.According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 9.8 square miles (25.3 km²) of it is land, and 6.1 square miles of it (15.8 km 2) is water. It is bordered to the north by Bourne and Monument Beach, to the east by the Massachusetts Route 28 highway; to the south by the village of Cataumet and Red Brook Pond; and to the west by the northern end of Buzzards Bay. The U.S. Census Bureau defines Pocasset as a census-designated place (CDP) with a population of 2,816. It has a population density of 3.7 people per square mile (9.5/km²) and a land area of 6.8 sq mi (13.3/ km²), all of which is land. The CDP is located on the Massachusetts Turnpike, which runs north-south through the town. It also runs east-west along the Massachusetts State Highway 28 highway, which connects Boston and Cambridge. The town's name is derived from the word "pocassett", which means "pink" or "picket" in English. It was also known as "Pooasset" in the 19th century, when the area was first settled. The name is still used to refer to an area of the same name.
Name
The name derives from the Pocasset Wampanoag and evolved over time. The name is derived from the early Indians Pouglikeeste, Pokesit, and now called Pocassett. The site is located in the historic 2d Precinct of Sandwich, which was called Poug likeeste by the Indians, and Pokes it by a later period. It is located at the base of the Monument to the Virgin Islands, which dates back to the 12th century. The area was once known as the "Pocasset Precinct" and was the site of the first European contact with the Native Americans. It was also known as "Processet" by the Native American people. The current name of the site is "The Monument to The Virgin Islands," which dates to the 13th century and is based on the name of a Native American tribe. The monument is located on the shore of the Virgin Island of New England, near the town of Wareham, in the English Channel. It stands on what is now called the North Sea coast, and was once called the "Marine Precinct," or "The Island of Sandwich" The name "Poccasset" means "the Island of the Sandwich Islands" in English, and refers to the ancient 2d prefecture of Sandwich, called by the early Indians Pouglikeeste, "Pokesit" and "Pomplikeeste" by a later period.

The CDP is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which runs through the town. It is the only town in the state to have a post office that serves both New Jersey and New Jersey. The post office has been open since 1883. The town's name is derived from the word "New Jersey", which means "New York City" or "New England". The town has a population of 2,038, with a population density of 209.8 per km² (543.9 permi2). It is located at the junction of New Jersey State Routes.
Drinking water
In May 2016, three homes in a Pocasset neighborhood received bottled water, because of elevated perfluorinated organic compounds in drinking water. The compounds are linked to firefighting foam used after military fuel truck crashes at Otis Rotary, which connects to nearby Otis Air National Guard Base. The homes received the bottled water in May 2016. The water is safe to drink, according to the town's water department. The bottled water will be delivered to the homes in May 2017, the town says. The town is working with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to get the water tested again for the compounds in the drinking water and to test the water for any other potential health risks.
Landmarks
Wing's Neck Light is a Cape Cod-style lighthouse built in 1849. It has a white, wooden hexagonal tower and lantern room on top of a stone house where the keeper lived. The lighthouse is located in the town of Wing's Neck on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. The keeper lived in the stone house, which is now a private residence, and the lighthouse is now owned by the town.
