Salisbury

Salisbury is a city in and the county seat of Wicomico County, Maryland, United States. It is the largest city in the state's Eastern Shore region. The population was 33,050 at the 2020 census. The city is the commercial hub of the Delmarva Peninsula, which was long devoted to agriculture and had a southern culture. Many historians believe that the name was inspired by the city of Salisbury, England, an ancient cathedral city. The nearest major cities to Salisbury are Baltimore 106 miles (171 km), Washington, D.C. 119 miles (192 km), Philadelphia 128 miles (206 km), Norfolk 132 miles (212 km), and Wilmington 96 miles (154 km) The city has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa), with hot, humid summers and, on average, cool to mild winters. On average, Salisbury annually receives around 47.1,210 mm of precipitation, with 8.0 in (20.3 cm) of snow per year. It has a varying elevation of 17 to 45 feet (5.2 to 13.7 m) above sea level. Salisbury is home to a historical City Park, the Salisbury Zoo, The Centre at Salisbury shopping mall, and the WIComico Youth & Civic Center. The Gillis-Grier House, Honeysuckle Lodge, Sen. William P. Jackson House, Pemberton Hall, Perry-Cooper House, Poplar Hill Mansion, Union Station, and F. Leonard Wailes Law Office are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

History

At first, it was a small colonial outpost set up by Lord Baltimore. Many historians believe that the name was inspired by the city of Salisbury, England, an ancient cathedral city. In 1867, when the Wicomico County was formed out of parts of both Somerset and Worcester Counties, Salisbury became the government seat. The Gillis-Grier House, Honeysuckle Lodge, Sen. William P. Jackson House, Pemberton Hall, Perry-Cooper House, Poplar Hill Mansion, Union Station, and F. Leonard Wailes Law Office are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Salisbury is also home to a historical City Park, the Salisbury Zoo, The Centre at Salisbury shopping mall, and the WIComico Youth & Civic Center. The City is host to a wide variety of events celebrating local culture and the arts. These events include 3rd Friday, an event held in downtown Salisbury on the third Friday of each month, celebrating local music, artists, and nonprofit organizations. It is also the home of the National Museum of American History, which was established in 1851. The National Museum is located in the National Gallery of Art, which is located on the second floor of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, which opened in 1854. The Museum is home to the National Archives of the United States, which dates back to the 17th century. It was the first museum in the world to be dedicated to the American Revolution.

Salisbury has a total area of 13.87 square miles (35.92 km²), of which 13.40 square mile (34.71 km²) is land and 0.47 sq miles (1.22 km 2) is water. The nearest large city is Baltimore, which is 106 miles from Salisbury, and the nearest small city is Wilmington, Delaware, at 96 miles. The city is located on the Atlantic seaboard and is located in the eastern part of the Eastern Seaboard. It is one of the most densely populated cities in the United States, with a population of more than 1.2 million. The population of Salisbury was 1.3 million in the 2010 U.S. Census bureau report. The town has a population density of 1.1 per cent. It has a water surface of 0.7 per cent of the city's total area, and a total of 13 square miles of land. The closest major cities are Baltimore, Washington, DC, and Philadelphia.

The monthly daily average temperature at nearby Wicomico Regional Airport ranges from 36.8 °F (2.7 °C) in January to 77.9 °F [25.5 °C] in July. There are 30 days of 90°F (32°C)+ highs annually and 7 days where the high fails to rise above freezing. Record temperatures range from 10 °F on January 11, 1942, up to 106 °C on July 21, 1930 and August 7, 1918. However, temperatures reaching 0 °F and lower, or 100 °F and higher, are rare, having last occurred January 9, 2017 and July 27, 2012, respectively. The average temperature in Salisbury in July is 77.5°F  (25.4 °C), while the average July high is 90 °F  (32 °F)  in July is 90 °F + (32 °C). Salisbury is located on the eastern edge of the Chesapeake Bay, and is on the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S. East Coast. It is located in the Coastal Plain region of the state.

Demographics

Salisbury is the principal city of the Salisbury, Maryland-Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 2005, 324 new single family homes were built, with an average value of $119,358. In 2010, there were 30,343 people, 11,983 households, and 6,040 families residing in the city. In the city, the age distribution of the population shows 21.8% under the age of 18, 21.4% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 17.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 3.00. The median income for a household in theCity was $29,191, and the median income. for a family was $35,527. The city has a population of 32,850 people and 12,542 households in 2022, with a population density of 2,850 inhabitants per square mile (874.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 55.7% White, 34.4%. African American, 3.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.47% from other races, and 2.06% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.0%. The city was 41.2%. White, 42.7%. Native American. 3.7. Asian. 3,7, Hispanic or Hispanic. Islander. 74%.

Crime

Garfield King (c. 1880-May 25, 1898) was a black man lynched by a mob in Salisbury. He was hung next to the courthouse after he reportedly shot Herman Kenney, a 22-year-old white man with a revolver after arguing with him. Matthew Williams was accused of murdering his white employer, Daniel J. (DJ) Elliot, at his office on Lake Street. A 300-man white mob threw Williams from a second-floor window to the crowd below, where he was stabbed, tied to a truck and dragged three blocks to the county court house. There they hanged him from a tree, before he had any chance of a trial. The mob paraded Williams' body through the black part of Salisbury for intimidation, and mutilated and burned him. No one was prosecuted for Williams' killing, as was typical in lynchings. As of 2007, there was no commemoration of the extrajudicial killing. In January 2020, Mayor Jake Day announced the formation of a Lynching Memorial Task Force which was tasked with "coordinating with the Equal Justice Initiative's Community Remembrance Project to facilitate the creation of a permanent monument in honor and solemn remembrance of the three American citizens who lost their lives at the hands of lynch mobs in Wicomico County" A 2018 documentary film (The Sign) was produced, documenting and unraveling the complexities of this conflict, "exposing deep wounds from the complicated history of the Eastern Shore".

Government

The form of government is strong-mayor, as defined by the City Charter. In this form, executive functions are vested in a popularly elected mayor who serves a four-year term. The Mayor is the chief executive officer and the head of the administrative branch of the city government. Legislative and oversight functions are the purview of the elected council. The council meets in regular session the second and fourth Monday of each month in Council Chambers. On June 18, 2010 Salisbury received the All-America City Award. The City received the award for three projects: revitalization of Rose and Lake Street neighborhoods in partnership with nonprofit organization Salisbury Neighborhood Housing, Inc. The Youth Leadership Academy which developed leadership in students in grades 8-11. Homeless initiatives including the Code Blue Shelter operated by nonprofit organization Hope And Life Outreach (HALO) with assistance for veterans from nonprofit NATRA, Inc., which provides counseling services. The State of Maryland, Parkside High School CTE program, Hebron Savings Bank, and a grant from the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore received the grant for the City's revitalization project. The award was given to Salisbury for its efforts to improve the quality of life in the city. The city is located in Wicomico County, Maryland, and is located on the eastern edge of the Chesapeake Bay. Economy and businesses

According to the US Conference of Mayors, the Salisbury MD-DE Metropolitan Statistical Area had the 7th fastest rate of job growth in the nation in 2016. The labor market for Wicomico County is 45,033 and for the lower shore three counties a total of 86,798 (as of May 2017) Perdue Farms is the largest employer headquartered in Salisbury (with nearly 22,000 employees) Piedmont Airlines, a regional airline, is headquartered in unincorporated Wicamico County, on the grounds of Salisbury-Ocean City Wicmico Regional Airport near Salisbury. Salisbury University, Verizon, Peninsula Regional Medical Center, The Knowland Group and Pepsi Bottling of Delmarva are some of the major employers in the area. The area is home to the University of Maryland, Salisbury, and the College of Arts and Sciences, which was founded in 1864. The city is also home to a number of non-profit organizations, such as the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, which provides support for the local economy. The town is also the home of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which has a mission to improve the quality of life in the United States and around the world. It is the birthplace of the U.S. Air Force Academy, which is based in the town ofisbury, Maryland. The state's largest employer is the Peninsula Regional Medical Center, which employs more residents than any other. The county's unemployment rate is 4.2%, the lowest in the state.

Education

Public schools are under the jurisdiction of Wicomico County Public Schools. Several private institutions maintain academic programs within the city. Salisbury University and Wor-Wic Community College are public institutions. The Salisbury School is a private day school. The city is home to a number of private schools, including Faith Baptist School, Salisbury Christian School, St. Frances de Sales, Stepping Stones Learning Academy, and TheSalisbury School. The City of Salisbury is the home of the Salisbury High School football team, which won the state championship in 2010. The school is located in the city's East Salisbury neighborhood. The town is also home to several private institutions, including Salisbury Baptist Academy and St. Francis de Sales School. It is also the home to the Westside Intermediate School, a private school that won the school championship in 2008. The Westside School was founded in the 1950s and is located on Westside Road. The community is also known as the "Salisbury of the Hills" because of its location in the hills. It was the site of the town's first high school, which opened in the 1960s. In the 1970s and 1980s, the town became known as "The City of the hills" due to its location on the hilltop. The name is still used to refer to the city by many residents, including the mayor and the mayor of the city council. The current mayor is John McKeever, who has served as mayor since 2001. The mayor's office has been in charge of running the city since 2003.
