LaFayette (luh-FAY-et) is a city in, and the county seat of, Walker County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 6,888. It was founded as Chattooga, in 1835, as the seat of newly formed Walker County. LaFayette is located at 34°4235N 85°172W (34.709704, -85.283862). According to the United States Census Bureau, theCity has a total area of 8.1 square miles (21 km²), all land. It is part of the Chattanooga, TN-GA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is home to the Walker County Messenger, the county newspaper since 1877, and WQCH Radio, a local radio station. The U.S. Army has a base in LaF Lafayette. The National Guard has a training facility in the city, as has the Georgia Army National Guard and the Georgia Air National Guard. The Georgia State Guard is based in the City of LaFayet, and has a military base in the nearby town of Chatsworth. The state guard is based at the Georgia National Guard Base, which is also the home of the Georgia State Air Guard. It has a national guard base in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and a National Guard base in Chatsford, Georgia. The City of Chastain is the home town of the Chastanet County Sheriff's Office.

History

LaFayette was founded as Chattooga, in 1835, as the seat of newly formed Walker County. The county was named after the former United States senator Freeman Walker. It was renamed LaFayette in 1836 after Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, the French aristocrat who fought in the American Revolutionary War. The city is located in the eastern part of the state, near the town of Fayetteville. It has a population of about 2,000, with the majority of its residents living in the city of about 1,500. The town has a history of being the site of several violent incidents, including the shooting of two men in 1831 and the murder of a woman in 1834. The community has a reputation for being a hardworking community. It is also known for its quality of life, with many residents working hard to support the local economy. In 1836, the city was named for the Marquis of Lafayette, who fought for the French in the Revolutionary War and died in 1839. The name was changed to LaFayet in honor of the city's first mayor, who died in office in 1841. The current mayor is  David Crowley, who was elected to a second term in 1855, and was re-elected in 1856, and again in 1881, and 1883. The state's population is about 2.5 million. It also has a long history of violence, with some of its most violent incidents occurring in the early 1800s.

LaFayette has a population of 2,816. The city is located in the Ouachita National Forest, which is part of the U.S. state of Louisiana. The town has a history of being known as "La Fayette" or "Lafayette" for its French-speaking population. It is also known as the town of "Fayetteville" because of the town's French-language history. It was named after the French town of La Fayette, which was founded in 17th century. It has been the site of several battles, including the Battle of Fayetteville, which took place in 1788. The U.N. World Heritage Center is located there. It also has a museum, the National Museum of American History, and the Museum of Louisiana, which dates back to the 18th century, and was established in 1781. The museum is also home to the Louisiana State Museum, which has a collection of historic buildings, including a 19th-century French-American home. The state's first post-Civil War hospital was built in 1776. The current mayor is a former mayor of the city, who was elected in 1894. He was re-elected in 1998 and served until 2000.

Demographics

As of the 2010 U.S. census, there were 7,121 people, 2,712 households, and 1,749 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 88.6% White, 7.5% African American, 0.04% Native American,0.9% Asian, 0.,01% Pacific Islander, 0,76% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. The city's population was spread out, with 24.1% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 21.6%, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median income for a household in theCity was $23,093, and the median income. for a family was $29,387. About 16.0% of families and 27.2%. of the population were below the poverty line, including 33.4%. of those under age 18 and 15.7% of those age 65 or over. The per capita income for the city is $15,318. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size was 2.94. For every 100 females, there are 83.5 males. The city has a population density of 871.6 inhabitants per square mile (336.5/km²). There were 2,926 housing units at an average density of 361.6 per squaremile (139.6/km 2).
