Cartersville, originally known as Birmingham, was founded by English-Americans in 1832. It was designated the seat of Bartow County in 1867 following the destruction of Cassville by Sherman in the American Civil War. Cartersville was the long-time home of Amos Akerman, U.S. Attorney General under President Ulysses S. Grant. The highest point in the city is 1,562 feet (476 m) at the summit of Pine Mountain. The city is located 42 miles (68 km) northwest of downtown Atlanta and 76 miles (122 km) southeast of Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Etowah River flows through a broad valley south of the downtown, leading west to Rome, where it forms the Coosa River, a tributary of the Alabama River. Red Top Mountain State Park sits on a peninsula in the lake, just outside the city limits. The following communities border the city:Adairsville, Cassville, Emerson, Euharlee, Kingston, Stilesboro, and Grassdale Road. The Cartersvile Airport is a public use airport located in the west side of the city. It is the home base of Phoenix Air. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 23,187, with a population growth rate of significantly higher than the national average of 0.9%. History
Cartersville is the primary city name, but also Emerson are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Cartersville, Georgia. Cartersville, originally known as Birmingham, was founded by English-Americans in 1832. The present name is for Col. Farish Carter of Milledgeville, the owner of a large plantation. Cartersville was the long-time home of Amos Akerman, U.S. Attorney General under President Ulysses S. Grant. On February 26, 1916 a group of one hundred men and boys took Jesse McCorkle from the jail and hanged him from a tree in front of the city hall and riddled his body with bullets. The town was designated the seat of Bartow County in 1867 following the destruction of Cassville by Sherman in the American Civil War. Carartersville was incorporated as a city in 1872. The city is located on the banks of the Tallahassee River, which was once known as the Tallapoosa River. It is the site of the Alabama State Fair, the state's largest annual event, which takes place in late October and early November. The fair is open to the public and is free of charge, except for alcohol and tobacco. It also offers a variety of other events, including the Alabama National Museum of Fine Arts, which is open through the end of the year.

It is the home base of Phoenix Air, a public use airport located in the west side of the city on State Route 61. The following communities border the city: Adairsville, Cassville, Euharlee, Stilesboro, Kingston, White, Rockmart, and Cassville. It has a population of 2,816. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in World War I. It also hosted the Battle of Gettysburg.

The Booth is the second-largest art museum in Georgia, and houses the largest permanent exhibition space for Western art in the country. The Pine Mountain Recreation Area trails ascend to a summit at 1562 feet overlooking Cartersville. Atlanta & Allatoona Lake can also be seen from the summit. Rose Lawn, a house museum, is the former home of noted evangelist Samuel Porter Jones, for whom the Union Gospel Tabernacle (Ryman Auditorium) in Nashville was built, later to become the Grand Ole Opry. The world's first outdoor Coca-Cola sign, painted in 1894, is located in downtown Carter'sville on Young Brothers Pharmacy's wall. The Etowah Indian Mounds is an archaeological Native American site in Bartow County, south of Cartersvile. The Tellus Science Museum, formerly the Weinman Mineral Museum, is a Smithsonian Institution Affiliate and features the first digital planetarium in North Georgia. NASA has installed a camera that tracks meteors at the museum. It is a museum displaying a diverse collection of automobiles and original works of art. The Bartow History Museum is located. in the Old Cartersvillian Courthouse, c. 1870, in downtownCartersville on East Church Street. It has a collection of more than 1,000 pieces of art, many of which have never been seen in public before. It also has a large collection of antique cars.
