Newton is located at 31°190N 84°2022W (31.316804, -84.339549) The city is the county seat of Baker County. The city has a total area of 3.0 square miles (7.8 km²), of which 2.9 square miles is land and 0.3 km², or 3.50%, is water. There are several properties in Newton listed on the National Register of Historic Places: Baker County Courthouse (Georgia), Notchaway Baptist Church and Cemetery, and Pine Bloom Plantation. There is one K-12 school building for the Baker County School System. The old school building that housed the students near the courthouse was built in the late 1960s and now houses the East Baker Historical Society and 21st Century Community Corporation. From 1980 to 2007, the high school students traveled from Newton to Camilla for high school, formerly Mitchell-Baker High School. The high school was returned to Newton for the 2007-2008 school year. The new gym for Baker County Schools was expected to be completed in 2009. It is located on State Route 37 and was named Baker County Elementary/Middle School in 2001. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.17. The median income for a household in the city was $26,563. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 602, with a median income of $27,386. There were 320 households, out of which 38.1% had children under the age of 18.
History
Newton was founded in 1837. The seat of Baker County was transferred to Newton from Byron. There are several properties in Newton listed on the National Register of Historic Places: Baker County Courthouse (Georgia), Notchaway Baptist Church and Cemetery, and Pine Bloom Plantation. The town is located in Baker County, Georgia, near the state line with South Carolina. It has a population of about 2,000 people. It is located on the Georgia Turnpike, which was built in 1838. It was the first stop on the Underground Railroad in the United States. The city is home to the Newton High School, which opened its doors in 1839. It also has a high school, the Newton Academy, and the Newton Junior High School. The school was founded by John Newton, who moved to Newton in 1836. The high school was closed in 1849, but reopened in 1852. It now has a senior high school and a junior high school. The community has a number of historic buildings, including a courthouse and a cemetery. The church is also home to a Baptist church and cemetery, which were built in the 19th century. The state's first post office was opened in Newton in 1840. It closed in 1861, and was replaced by a post office in 1872. It reopened again in 1874. The town's nickname is "Newton" and it is located on the New Hampshire Turnpike, which runs from New Hampshire to New Hampshire. It is also known as "The Big Apple" because of its large number of turnpikes and other mountain peaks. It has a population of 2,856. It was the site of the first recorded human sacrifice in the United States, in 1805, when a man was killed by a Native American tribesman in the town of Newton, North Carolina. The U.N. World Heritage Site is located in Newton, New Hampshire and was declared a World Heritage site in 1998. It also has a National Register of Historic Places site, which dates back to 1805. The City of Newton was founded in 1806. It became the first city in the state to have a post-secondary school in 1807. The first post- secondary school was opened in 1808. In 1809, Newton was the location of the town's first high school, which was built in 1809.

Education
There is one K-12 school building for the Baker County School System. It is located on State Route 37 and was named Baker County Elementary/Middle School in 2001. The new gym for Baker County Schools was expected to be completed in 2009 and will be used for the Headstart Center. It will be the first gym in the state to be built in more than a decade. The school system is expected to have a new gym completed by the end of the year. It was expected that the new gym would be finished by the start of the 2009-10 school year, but the school system has yet to announce a date for the completion of the gym. The gym will be located in the old high school building, which is now used as a headstart center for the children of the community. The former high school is located in Camilla and is now the home of the Camilla Head Start Center for the community's young children. The elementary school was located in Newton and was closed in the 1970s and 1980s and was replaced by a new building.
