Clinton is the county seat of Van Buren County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,602 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous city in the county (reclaiming the distinction from the resort community of Fairfield Bay). The city was named for DeWitt Clinton, the New York governor who built the Erie Canal; he had also been a U.S. Senator from New York. The city is situated on the shore of the Archey Fork, a tributary of the Upper Little Red River which flows into Greers Ferry Lake. A channelization project in 1982 following a major flood event has recently been re-engineered by The Nature Conservancy. The restoration is now part of the city's historic downtown park and trail system. The National Championship Chuckwagon Races are held annually at the Bar of Ranch, drawing many thousands to the area each Labor Day weekend with rodeo and music performances. On February 5, 2008 an EF4 tornado struck Clinton, killing three people and destroying many homes and businesses, including a boat manufacturing facility. The Clinton mascot and athletic emblem is the Yellowjacket. Clinton is a high school graduate of the 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist swimmer John Hargis, who went on to win the 1996 Gold Medal for Swimming with the Harlem Globetrotters. Clinton has a population of 2,509, according to the 2020 United States census, with a population density of 200.3 inhabitants per square mile (77.3/km²).

Geography

The City of Clinton is situated on the shore of the Archey Fork, a tributary of the Upper Little Red River which flows into Greers Ferry Lake. This body of water is known for its rich and diverse fish habitat and recreational uses. A channelization project in 1982 following a major flood event has recently been re-engineered by The Nature Conservancy in cooperation with city officials and corporate sponsors. The multi-phase restoration project has witnessed the installation of a cantilevered stream bed, bank stabilization, and habitat regeneration. The restoration is now part of the city's historic downtown park and trail system. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.6 square miles (30 km²) of which 11.4 square miles is land and 0.52 km² (1.64%) is water. The city is located on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Army Riverine Riverine Waterway, which is a major source of water for the city of Clinton. The river is one of the largest rivers in the state, with more than 1,000 miles (2,000 km) of water flowing through it. It is also the largest river in West Virginia, with over 1,200 miles (1,600 km) flowing through the city. The U.N. World Heritage Site is located in the city, along with a number of national parks, including Mount Rushmore and the Grand Canyon. The National Park Service is based in Clinton.

Demographics

As of the 2020 U.S. census, there were 2,509 people, 942 households, and 608 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 95.71% White, 0.04% Black or African American, 0.74% Native American, 1.13% Asian, 1.31% from other races, and 2.06% from two or more races. About 15.7% of families and 17.9% of the population were below the poverty line. The median income for a household was $22,206, and the medianincome for a family was $30,792. The per capita income for theCity was $15,514. The city's population was 2,283 as of the census of 2000, with 1,123 people living in 1,007 households. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was2.87. The population was spread out, with 23.1% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, and 22.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females,there were 90.3 males. For each 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.3 Males. The City's median income was $24,750 versus $19,152 for females. The U.N. estimates the city has a population of 2,300.

Education

Public education for elementary and secondary students is available from the Clinton School District with students graduating from Clinton High School. The Clinton mascot and athletic emblem is the Yellowjacket. The school district is located in Clinton, New Jersey. The district is home to Clinton High and Clinton Elementary schools. It is also home to the Clinton Junior/Senior High School and the Clinton Senior High School football teams. The high school is located on the New Jersey Turnpike and has a population of 3,000. Chuckwagon Races

The National Championship Chuckwagon Races are held annually at the Bar of Ranch in Clinton. The event is a major tourist attraction drawing many thousands to the area each Labor Day weekend with rodeo and futurity events, auctions, live music performances, and the grand finale Snowy River race. The race is held on the banks of the Snowy river, which runs through the town of Clinton. It is one of the largest Chuckwagon races in the world. The winner of the race receives a $10,000 prize for the best overall finish. The final race of the season takes place on September 28, 2013, at the Bar of Ranch, in Clinton, New York. The prize money for the winner is $5,000, with the winner receiving $1,000 for the second place winner, $2,500 for the third place winner and $3,000 each for the fourth and fifth place finishers.

Tornado outbreak

On February 5, 2008 an EF4 tornado struck Clinton, killing three people. The tornado destroyed many homes and businesses, including a boat manufacturing facility. It was the deadliest tornado to hit Clinton since the town was hit by an EF3 tornado in 1998. The town was also the site of a deadly tornado in 2007. The city was hit with a EF4 Tornado on February 5th, 2008, killing 3 people and destroying many homes, businesses, and a boat factory. The area was also hit by a EF3 Tornado on January 31, 2007, killing two people and injuring more than a dozen others. The Town of Clinton was hit hard by the tornado in 2008, and was hit again on February 11, 2008. It is located on the banks of the Clinton River, near the town of Clinton, Mississippi. It has a population of about 2,000 people.
