Hamburg is a city and county seat of Ashley County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,857 at the 2010 census. It is best known for being the home town of NBA legend Scottie Pippen. Hamburg has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. The city is home to the Armadillo Festival, held the first weekend in May every year since 1970. Hamburg High School was nationally recognized as a Silver Medalist and the No. 1737 (national rank) and No. 14 (state rank) in U.S. News & World Report's Best High Schools list in 2012. The current mayor of Hamburg is David Streeter. Hamburg is the birthplace of Harry Cohen, a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Detroit Tigers and the Philadelphia Phillies, and the Houston Rockets, a basketball player for the Chicago Bulls, and two Olympic gold medalists. The town is also home to Miss Arkansas USA 2008, Miss Arkansas Teen USA, Miss Teen USA Teen, and Olympic gold-time gold medalist and gold-medal winner Perry Perry, a swimmer for the United States Olympic Team in 2008. The mayor is Dane Weindorf, and former mayors include Maxwell Hill, Thomas Crow Hundley, and Thomas Crow Hennington. Hamburg was the site of the trial of Abby Guy, a local slave who sued for her freedom in 1855. A jury of twelve white men found in her favor and set her free, but the decision was reversed.

Geography

Hamburg is located at 33°1339N 91°4754W (33.227369, -91.798472). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.4 square miles (8.8 km²), all land. The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. The Köppen Climate Classification system has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. The city is located in the state of Hamburg, which is part of the Hamburg-Leverkusen region of Germany. It has a population of 2,816,000. The population of Hamburg in the U.S. is 2,715,000, according to the 2010 Census. It is the second largest city in Hamburg, after the city of Düsseldorf, and the third largest in Germany after the town of Leipzig. Hamburg is located on the Baltic Sea and the Rhine River. The town's name is German for "little city" or "little town" and refers to the city's small size. It also means "little village" in German and "hamburg" in English. The city's population was 3,039 at the 2000 census. At the 2010 census there were 3,000 people living in the town. The population density was 890.4 inhabitants per square mile (343.8/km²). There were 1,264 housing units at an average density of 370.3 per squaremile (143.0/ km²). The city has a population of 2,500 people, with 1,158 households, including 802 families. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.12. The age distribution was 27.9%. For every 100 females,there were 89.9 males. For each 100 females age 18 or over, there are 84.4 males.

Culture

In April 1855, a local slave Abby Guy sued for her freedom and a trial was held in Hamburg. A jury of twelve white men found in her favor and set her free, but the decision was reversed by the Arkansas Supreme Court. Two more jury trials were then held and she was eventually freed. Hamburg is home-base to the Armadillo Festival, held the first weekend in May since 1970. The festival is one of the oldest in the United States, and has been going since the early 1900s. It is held in the same location as the original Armadillos, which were found in Hamburg in the early 19th century. It's held every year on the last weekend of May, and the festival is free to the public.

It was founded in 1881 and has been the seat of Hamburg City Council since 1881. The first mayor was elected in 1883 and the current mayor is Streeter, who took office in 1998.

Education

Hamburg School District is one of the two public school districts in Ashley County. In 2012, Hamburg High School was nationally recognized as a Silver Medalist and the No. 1737 (national rank) and No. 14 (state rank) in the Best High Schools Report developed by U.S. News & World Report. Public education for elementary and secondary school students is provided by the Hamburg School District.
