Stuttgart is a city in and the county seat of Arkansas County, Arkansas, United States. Established by German settlers, it was named for its larger German counterpart. Known as the "Rice and Duck Capital of the World", the city is an international destination for waterfowl hunting along the Mississippi Flyway. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 9,326. Stuttgart and Arkansas County are located in the Arkansas Delta (in Arkansas, usually referred to as "the Delta") a subregion of the Mississippi Alluvial Plain. Distinctively, rice is the main crop; soybeans, cotton, corn, and wheat are also grown. The rice fields provide habitat and forage for large numbers and many species of water fowl. The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. It has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. It is located at 34°2949N 91°333W (34.497043, -91.550917). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.2 square miles (18.7 km²), all land. The city is located on U.S. Route 165, approximately 45 miles (72 km) southeast of Little Rock; and on. Route 79 approximately 110 miles southwest of Memphis, Tennessee. It became a dual county seat in Arkansas County with DeWitt in the 1920s.

History

Stuttgart was founded by Reverend Adam Bürkle, a native of Plattenhardt in Germany. In 1882, the Texas and St. Louis railroad was opened. Stuttgart became a city in 1884, and in 1904, rice farming was first introduced in the area. It became a dual county seat in Arkansas County with DeWitt in the 1920s. It was the site of the U.S. Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s and 1970s. The city's first Postmaster General was a black man named Martin Toms, according to the US Census. It is located in the German state of Württemberg, and was once the capital of the Kingdom of Wurstenburg. It has a population of about 2,000,000 and is home to the University of St. Tunisia, which was founded in 1858. It also has a university, which opened in 1881. It had a post office, which is still in operation today. The town is located on the banks of the Missouri River, which runs through the city. The river was once known as the "Missouri River" and was used as a route for the Missouri and Illinois Mississippi railroads. It now has a paved road that runs through it, and the city has a lake, which used to be called the "Gum Pond" waterway. The village was named in honor of his home, which he built in 1852.

The city is the most important city within the Grand Prairie region, historically a flat grassland plain underlain by an impermeable clay layer. Distinctively, rice is the main crop; soybeans, cotton, corn, and wheat are also grown. The rice fields provide habitat and forage for large numbers and many Species of Waterfowl; duck, goose, and other species of fish are also found in the area. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the city to have a population of 2,715,000 (2,816,000 in 2010). The city's population is expected to grow to 2,900,000 by the end of the century.

Demographics

As of the 2010 U.S. Census, there were 9,326 people living in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 64.0% white or Caucasian, 34.5% black or African American, 0.6% Asian and 0.2% Native American. The city has a population of 8,264 people, 3,607 households, and 2,197 families. The average household size was 2.40, and the median income for a household was $31,664. The per capita income for the city is $16,490. About 13.8% of families and 18.2%. of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.7% of those under age 18 and 17.3% ofThose age 65 or over. The median age of a city resident is 38 years old, with the average age of death being 44.5 years old. The population density is 1,583.0 inhabitants per square mile (611.2/km²) The city's population is 8,265 people, with 3,994 households, out of which 31.6. had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.0. were married couples living together, 16.7. had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4. had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. There were 4,384 housing units at an average density of 712.2 per squaremile (275.0/ km²).

Economy

Stuttgart is home to Mack's Prairie Wings, known around the world as the premier waterfowl sports outfitter, through their store and online presence. The Stuttgart Baptist Hospital is a central hospital for much of the surrounding region - - Arkansas County, Prairie County, Monroe County, Western Phillips, Northern Jefferson County, and Eastern Lonoke County. The University of Arkansas' Dale Bumpers Rice Research Center employs a team of scientific researchers who breed new varieties of rice, and is one of the biggest employers in the area. The city also has a Lennox Air Conditioner factory and Layne Arkansas, a business that installs water pumping wells to irrigate farms, and also installs city water systems. It is also home to Delta Plastics of the South, a manufacturer of plastic irrigation tubes used for watering crops, and Stratton Seed, a large marketer of soybeans and soybean seed. It has a branch of the Baptist Hospital Group which serves a large part of Arkansas, and it is a major employer in the city. It also hosts the World Championship Duck Calling Contest that brings in people of all ages from around the country to show off their talent using a duck call. The town has a population of about 4,000. The average income is about $30,000, and the average life expectancy is about 50 years old. The median household income is around $50,000; the average age is about 40 years old; and the city has a median life expectancy of about 60 years.

Education

Public education for elementary and secondary school students is primarily provided by Stuttgart Public Schools. Phillips County Community College, a two-year junior college, also has campuses in Helena and DeWitt. Saint John's Lutheran Elementary School, Holy Rosary Catholic Elementary School (of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Little Rock), and Grand Prairie Christian School are also located in the city. The city also has a branch of the University of Arkansas System, which is part of the Arkansas State University System. The town has a population of about 3,000 people, with the majority of them living in the central part of town. The population of the city is about 2,500 people, and the city has an estimated population of 4,000. The U.S. Census estimates the city's population at 3,200 people in the year 2000, and 3,500 in the 2010 Census. The area's population is about 4,100 people, including 2,000 residents of the central and southern parts of the town, and 1,500 from the rest of the state. It has a total population of 6,000, with most of its residents living outside the city limits. The majority of the population is of German descent, with about 1,000 of those being German-speaking. It is the only city in the state to have its own high school, with students graduating from high school at the end of the school year. It also has its own branch of Phillips County community college, which also has campus in Helena.

Arts and culture

Stuttgart is home to the Museum of the Arkansas Grand Prairie which has displays celebrating the history of Stuttgart, and the surrounding Grand Prairie area. There is an annual Wings Over The Prairie Festival every November, from Wednesday through Saturday, during Thanksgiving week. The festival features the World's Championship Duck Calling Contest, carnival rides, craft tents, and a Queen Mallard Pageant, all celebrating duck hunting. The Grand Prairie Center on the campus of Phillips County Community College brings in performances by live bands, and stage plays a handful of times each year. Many people in the area are big high school football fans, and can be found on Friday nights, in the Fall, supporting their St.uttgart Ricebirds highSchool football team which has won several Arkansas state championships during the last seventy-five years. The city also hosts an annual German Heritage Festival, as well as an annual Arts Festival held in the Grand Prairie Centre on thecampus of Phillips county Community College in Stuttgard. The town is also home to a number of other cultural events, such as a German-American Festival, and an American-German Festival, which is held every year in the summer. It is also the site of the World Championship Duck calling Contest, which takes place every November and is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the city. It also hosts the World Championships of Duck Calling, the world's largest duck hunting competition. The Stuttgar Ricebirds have won several state championships in the last 75 years, and are known for their football team.

Infrastructure

Stuttgart is located at the intersection of three north-south U.S. highways: US Highway 63 (US 63), US 79, and US 165. The city is also served by US 79 Business (US 79B), Highway 130 (AR 130), AR 146 Spur (AR 146S), and AR 276. The Stuttgart Municipal Airport is a general aviation airport located 8 miles (13 km) north of the city in Prairie County. It is the home of Baptist Health Medical Center-Stuttgard, a 49-bed acute care facility. The facility originally opened in 1957 under the name Stuttgard Memorial Hospital. It took its current name in 2007 when it became part of the Baptist Health System based in Little Rock, Arkansas. It was originally known as Stuttgar Regional Medical Center before becoming Baptist Health Medical Center Stuttgar in 2007. It has 49 beds and is located in the city's central business district, which is also known as the "Heart of the City" It is located on the banks of the Missouri River, which runs through the city. It also serves as a hub for the Arkansas River and the Arkansas Turnpike, which connects to the rest of the state of Arkansas and Texas. The airport has an asphalt paved runway that is used for general aviation aircraft. It opened in 1961. It serves as the home to the Stuttgart Municipal Airport, which was established in 1973. It currently has a runway that covers an area of 2.5 square miles (4.5 km).

In popular culture

The 1989 movie Rosalie Goes Shopping, directed by Percy Adlon and starring Marianne Sägebrecht, was set in Stuttgart. The city drew media attention during the sixth cycle of America's Next Top Model in the spring of 2006. A tornado that struck the city on Mother's Day, 2008, was featured on the November 9, 2008 episode of Storm Chasers on the Discovery Channel. Some scenery in the 2007 movie Shotgun Stories, starring Michael Shannon, was also filmed in England, Arkansas and North Little Rock. The 2012 movie Mud starring Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon, and directed by Jeff Nichols, also was filmed around DeWitt, Dumas, and Casscoe. The German city is home to the German Open tennis tournament, which is held every year in March. The tournament is one of the biggest in the world, beating out events such as Wimbledon and the World Cup. It is also the home of the German Tennis Association, which holds the world's largest annual tournament, the German Cup, and the German Masters Tennis Championship. It also hosts the World Series of Tennis, which runs from July to September each year. The final of the tournament is held on August 14, 2010, and is the first since the tournament began in 1998. It was the first time the tournament has been held in the German capital. The event was also the first to be held in a German city since the 1970s, when it was held in Berlin.
